ThayerMahan's Double Big Bubble Curtain Protects Whales from Loud Noises during Offshore Wind Construction
To detect human activities on or under the high seas, who better than a former submarine commander to lead development of those systems? In Groton under retired Vice Admiral Mike Conner, ThayerMahan runs a global network of seaborne acoustic systems, initially for the U.S. Navy to better pinpoint the location of enemy subs, but having expanded since to monitor foreign fishing vessels that may be violating trawling limitations, and the location of whales to help crews of container ships and other vessels lessen the risk of a strike that could injure animals. ThayerMahan has also played a part in the construction of wind turbines off the southern New England coast, working with a Germany company to create curtains of air bubbles around turbine construction sites to deter marine life from approaching. In August 2023, ThayerMahan promoted John Russ to lead ocean technologies development; Russ, like Conner, is a former submarine commander. ThayerMahan is now installing its systems on Bluebottle floating drones that can be operated autonomously for expanded, “persistent” surveillance on the world's oceans.
