We believe in safe oceans, the responsible collection of high-quality data, and respect for all marine life.
Alfred Thayer Mahan, the renowned naval strategist, understood that American economic prosperity hinged on command of the sea. Today, that vision remains relevant as the U.S. transitions from energy dependence to global leadership in energy exports, much of it sourced from beneath the ocean's surface. Yet, as our economy evolves, it's clear that prosperity now relies not just on resources, but on fostering an economy that prioritizes responsible stewardship of marine environments. This shift requires transparency of data to guide sound decision-making.
At ThayerMahan, our advanced maritime technology provides the critical, real-time data needed for connected, sustainable, safe and automated offshore infrastructure projects and to improve end-to-end port operations.
ThayerMahan's high-performance, directional acoustic arrays and processing provide the only coherently beamformed solution on the market. Our US owned and operated passive acoustic monitoring systems – developed and fine-tuned over 70 years of undersea defense operations – is the only capability that can effectively detect and report whales in near real-time during offshore construction.
The oceans are more vital than ever, and we are at the forefront of ensuring their careful stewardship.
We are a U.S. company that combines extensive maritime knowledge, tested cutting-edge high-tech, and a local presence to fundamentally change offshore maritime construction.
High-Resolution Seabed Survey:
We assist our clients and partners to see and understand critical seabed areas using cutting-edge high-speed, ultra-high-resolution imaging equipment called Synthetic Aperture Sonar (SAS). For example, we can evaluate foundations, detect deteriorating cables before they fail, or track biological habitats on the ocean floor. We combine this data with our artificial intelligence to identify and track changes over time.
Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) Classification and Removal:
Our oceans have been victims of human conflict; it is now our responsibility to remove the remaining dangers. Some places on the seabed are unsafe and we work to make them safe again. We find old explosives, effectively remove them, and report when the seabed is ready to support America's renewable energy agenda and other commercial needs. Our thought leadership is pushing to bring military-grade ordnance cleanup to the commercial sector. We have over 450 years of combined military expertise that is helping to drive change.
Acoustic Mitigation and Monitoring:
We shield marine animals from harmful loud construction sounds. We place a protective barrier called a big bubble curtain around a construction site and make sure construction noise won't cause harm. Our teams are dramatically reducing the sound signature from offshore wind farm development.
Marine Mammal Monitoring:
We protect endangered species like the North Atlantic Right Whale from harm. We use cutting-edge technology to observe and make sure conditions are safe for marine mammals. Along with daytime operations, ThayerMahan provides integrated systems combining electro-optical and infrared (EO/IR) cameras with innovative unmanned acoustic detection systems. The collective data illustrates a common operating picture and maritime domain awareness platform for effective detection, classification, and tracking of marine mammals during nighttime conditions. This approach aims for a fundamental shift from familiar, daylight marine mammal monitoring standard methods to employing more modern technologies to monitor exclusion zones during nighttime conditions effectively and efficiently. This culminates in heightened marine mammal location accuracy and provides timelier specimen alerts. These advancements ensure marine mammal protection during monopile production operations through a broader range of environmental conditions, allowing for less total installation time and less overall environmental impact.
